Letter to Parents

Dear Coach, Athlete, and Parents,

The Iron Wood Thrower Development Camp was created in 1989 to provide athletes and coaches with a place where they can improve their skills, increase their knowledge, and become motivated to reach their fullest potential.

Now in its 22nd year, the Iron Wood Thrower Development Camp has established itself as the largest specialty track and field camp in the United States. As of 2009, nearly 4,000 athletes and coaches have attended Iron Wood! Throwers from all over the United States and around the world have attended our camp. In fact, campers have come from as far away as Canada, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. During the summer of 2009, throwers of all ages came from 23 different states (AK, AZ, CA, CO, FL, IA, ID, IL, MO, MT, NH, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SD, TN, TX, UT, WA, WY) . Bud Rasmussen - Camp Director

No other throws camp can compare to Iron Wood’s proven record of success. We're extremely proud of our former campers, as they have gone on to achieve high levels of success in state, regional, national and international competition. For instance, in the year 2008 we saw our camp almuni earn the following accolades:

  • (??) – State Champions (Hundreds of state champions have come out of our programs over the past 20 years; unfortunately we are just now starting to research this statistic)
  • (2) – T&F News HS All-Americans (Jordan Clarke and Conor McCullough)
  • (1) – USATF National Jr. Olympic Champions (Alyssa Hasslen)
  • (1) – USATF Jr. Champions (Geoffrey Tabor)
  • (2) – USA World Junior Championships Team (Conor McCullogh and Geoffrey Tabor)
  • (21) – NCAA Division 1 All-Americans (Leif Arrhenius, Tai Battle, Preston Chatham, Stephanie Horton x2, Zach Lloyd x2, Jessica Pressley x5, Sarah Stevens x4, Colin Veldman, Matthew Wauters, and Ryan Whiting x3)
  • (3) – NCAA Division 1 National Champions (Jessica Pressley, Sarah Stevens, and Ryan Whiting)
  • (3) – USATF Sr. Champions (Jill Camarena, Aretha Hill-Thurmond, and Ian Waltz)
  • (1) – USA Indoor World Championships Team (Jill Camarena)
  • (4) – USA Olympic Team (Aretha Hill-Thurmond, Jill Camarena, Ian Waltz, and Casey Malone)

Whether our campers are just beginning their throwing careers, entering their final year of competition, or extending their careers as masters’ throwers, we are confident that we can help them to achieve a higher level of success. Our experienced coaching staff and unique system of instruction virtually guarantees that.

The majority of our instructional staff has been working together for many years and has literally spent hundreds of hours together designing a training system that will likely be the gold standard for throws camps many years into the future. With 22 Olympians and 7 former world record holders as well as several top-ranked collegiate, high school, and club coaches pooling all of their collective experience, knowledge and resources, we’ve been able to create a learning environment that produces both measurable and very specific results for teaching throwers at all levels.

Our comprehensive approach is designed to ensure that each camper will be able to maximize their capabilities in the most critical areas of throwing success: including event-specific techniques and training methods; speed, power, and strength training; flexibility, mobility, and coordination conditioning; and recovery, restoration, mental preparation, and sports nutrition protocols.

Finally, we also want campers and their parents to know that our number one priority is to have a safe camp and we make a strong commitment to supervise our programs better than any other camp in the country. A certified athletic trainer will be present at each practice session to care for accidents, injuries, illnesses, and medical emergencies. A certified strength and conditioning coach will be present at the weight room during the elective recreational hours and during all group instruction. Camp coaching staff members live on the same floors as the campers and provide adult supervision throughout camp.

Please note that a limited amount of space is available and we have “sold out” several of our past camp offerings. So don’t delay, register today! We look forward to hearing from you with any and all questions that may arise and hope that you will choose to join us for what promises to be our best camp ever later this summer!

Sincerely,
Bud Rasmussen
Director

Testimonials

" Iron Wood was my introduction to what elite level throwing was all about. Until attending Iron Wood, I thought throwing was a fun challenge that could occupy my time in between basketball and football seasons. The camp planted the seed of an Olympic dream in me and encouraged me to have an identity shift from a basketball player throwing for fun to a discus thrower playing basketball for fun. It was truly a life changing moment for me when Mac Wilkins arrived at the camp and passed around his gold medal. "

excerpts from a testimony from Casey Malone, 6th place at the 2004 Olympics
