The Iron Wood Thrower Development Camp was established in 1989 to promote the growth, education and improvement in the throwing events including discus, shot put, javelin and hammer. Now in our 20th year, we have established ourselves as the largest specialty track and field camp in the United States.
"When the concept of an instructional camp for throwers first came to me 20 years ago I had no idea it would grow to become what it is today. As a former collegiate thrower and a high school throws coach, I was troubled when I attended meets to see that the majority of the athletes were throwing incorrectly. So Bud Rasmussen and I decided to do something about it. Our first camp had just twelve athletes and in each successive year it has grown to the size it is now. I am deeply indebted to the many coaches, Olympians, and athletes who share my passion for the sport, and have joined together to help me put Iron Wood on the map as a world class throwing camp. What a privilege to see those who attend the camp leave with a deeper knowledge and respect of the historical and honorable sport of the throws."

Our curriculum is designed to accommodate all levels of experience. Whether the campers are just beginning their throwing careers, entering their final year of competition, or competing as masters throwers, we are confident that we can help them to achieve a higher level of success.

Our teaching progression features a whole-part-method of instruction and is reinforced by video feedback sessions and photo sequences. With isolated throwing areas for each event and over 60 separate throwing pads in use at each session for the discus and shot put sites, a low camper to coach ratio is ensured.
